Proton eMas 7 PHEV Malaysia – Official Preview of Proton’s First Plug-In Hybrid SUV

Preview of Proton’s First Plug-In Hybrid SUV

Proton officially revealed the Proton eMas 7 PHEV during the Proton Tech Showcase held on 4 December at the Proton Centre of Excellence (COE) in Shah Alam. This marks a major milestone for the brand as it introduces its first-ever plug-in hybrid model to the Malaysian market. Although not yet launched, the preview unit displayed to the public offers a clear representation of the model that is expected to enter Proton’s hybrid lineup

The Proton eMas 7 PHEV is based on Geely’s latest hybrid architecture, similar to the Starship/Galaxy 7 sold in global markets. Proton’s version, however, features its own styling cues, most noticeably a larger tiger emblem at the front and a refreshed SUV stance that looks more muscular compared to the fully electric eMas 7.

The front design stands out with split LED headlamps, a full-width daytime running light bar and a more defined grille section. Conventional door handles replace the flush units found on the EV model, and the rear receives a different bumper and tailgate layout. Many visitors pointed out that, with the number plate set higher, the rear silhouette resembles a premium European SUV. The preview unit also showcased 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and a dedicated charging port located on the side.

Inside, the right-hand-drive configuration mirrors the layout introduced in the eMas 7, complete with a wide infotainment display and a clean, modern dashboard setup.

Efficient EM-i Hybrid Power and Battery System

Powering the eMas 7 PHEV is a high-efficiency 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine paired with Geely’s EM-i Super Hybrid system. The internal combustion engine is built for reduced weight and maximum thermal efficiency, featuring simplified components and an electric-driven compressor to eliminate belt-driven losses.

An 18.4 kWh LFP battery supports the electric motor through a 12-in-1 Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). In many driving situations, the SUV operates primarily on electric power, only engaging the engine at higher speeds to maximise efficiency. This setup delivers strong responsiveness while ensuring excellent fuel savings during mixed driving conditions.

During the showcase briefing, Proton highlighted a total driving range claim of up to 1,065 km, depending on driving style and conditions. This places the eMas 7 PHEV among the longest-range electrified SUVs showcased in Malaysia to date.

Positioning and Market Expectations

While Proton has not announced the official price, the preview gathered strong interest from visitors and existing Proton owners. Survey forms circulating among Proton X50 customers suggested potential pricing in the RM130k–RM140k range, reflecting its higher hardware complexity and the absence of EV tax exemptions for PHEVs in Malaysia.

With its combination of hybrid efficiency, refined styling and advanced powertrain technology, the Proton eMas 7 PHEV is shaping up to be a compelling option for Malaysian families looking for a long-range electrified SUV.
